Following on from last years launch of the Metropolitan Police ‘Be Safe’ scooter theft campaign, a team from the MCIA has met with London Mayor, Sadiq Khan to discuss continuing industry measures to combat the theft of motorcycles, scooters and mopeds in London.
High on the agenda was the importance of continued factoring of powered two wheeled transportation into long term London transportation planning, with secure parking being a key consideration. The MCIA is encouraging the provision of more bike specific secure parking, such that motorbike riders can adopt double locking recommendations to reduce to bike theft. Initiatives like this are considered significant in their knock-on contribution to reducing city congestion, improving parking pressures and contributing to improved air quality.
MCIA CEO Tony Campbell explained: “For many hard working Londoners, motorcycles and scooters are the only realistic form of commuter transport, in terms of affordability, reliability and ease of movement. We will do whatever we can to help make sure that riders can go about their business safely on the streets of London and are working closely with both the Metropolitan Police and the Home Office to play our part in achieving this.”
